Cotton Festival draws good crowd for events

Hedley’s 56th annual Cotton Festival is being hailed as a success this year after visitors flocked to the community last Friday and Saturday.

The Lioness Club started the festival with their Purrfect Chili and Stew Supper on Friday night, and club president Katherine Monroe reported a good turn out for the meal.

The Lioness Club also held a Quilt Show on Saturday and held a drawing for a homemade quilt that was won by Renee Shields of Lelia Lake.

Both the tractor and car shows were held on Saturday morning.  Troy Monroe said there were not as many entries this year, but they hope to get more next year.

Best of Show in the Tractor Show went to Blackie Johnson with a 1952 Farmall Cub.  Benny Poe of Childress received Best of Show in the Car Show with a with a 1955 Chevy Bellaire, and second place went to Kelly Patton with another 1955 Chevy Bellaire.

Other winners in the Tractor Show included: Blackie Johnson – First in the 1940s Class with 1943 John Deere LA and second in the same class with a 1948 Allis Chalmers Model G; Leon Ward – First in the 1950s Class I with a 1958 Case 351; and Don Owens – first in the 1950s Class II with a 1959 Farmall 560 LP.

Winners in the Car Show also included: 1965-1970 Class – First, Redell Johnston of Howardwick with a 1966 Ford Mustang and Second, Aaron Hines of Austin with a 1970 Chevell; 1930s & 1940s Class – First, Don Higgs of Amarillo with a 1937 Flat Back Coach, and Second, Grady J. Milton of White Deer with a 1946 Ford; and New Class/1970s & Up – First, Shawna Herbert of Amarillo with a 1998 Chevy Corvette.

The Lions Club served about 169 plates of barbecue for lunch this year and sold a total of 250 lbs. of beef barbecue. They were assisted by Lions Sweetheart Paige Martin, and Timberly Potts won the Bale of Cotton.

The Parade was held Saturday afternoon with Doyle Messer as Parade Marshall, and winners are as follows:

Organizations – First, American Legion; Second, Hedley Fire Department; and Third, Hedley Varsity Cheerleaders and Football Players.

Open Class – First, 1949 Hudson Commodore; Second, 1952 Farmall Cub; and Third, Traikers Organization.

Floats – First, City Hall – Celebrating 100 Years; Second, Lions Club Sweetheart; and Third, Lioness Club.

Commercial – First, Jack King Ranch; Second, Donley County Gin; and Third, Kari’s Photography.

Other winners for the day included Jeff Winkler, who won the television given away by the Hedley Senior Citizens.
