Hedley High School’s UIL academic teams had a
good start to the 2009 season with a strong showing at the West Texas High
School Invitational meet in Stinnett last Saturday. The Science team
placed first, led by Dylan Pettit, Pete Howard, and Reid Copelin. They
finished 2nd, 3rd, and 6th individually in the contest, and Pettit won the
Chemistry portion of the test. Kailee Burton (8th), Joey Allen (15th),
Kayla Elam (18th), and Sierra Shelp (19th) also did well out of 58
contestants. The Calculator Applications team was 2nd place overall, with
Amber Burnam coming in 2nd individually and Elizabeth Garcia placing 8th.
Katrina Johnson, Cheyenne Kosachata, and Sierra Shelp rounded out
the team. The Social Studies team also placed 2nd, with Marlee Sargent
placing 4th and Benedikt Grieger placing 5th. Number Sense and Mathematics
teams placed 4th in the contest involving 13 schools, including Borger,
Pampa, River Road, Perryton, Dalhart, West Texas, and Canadian.
Competitors in these events included Dylan Pettit (6th Number
Sense), Pete Howard, Sarah Kwon (6th Mathematics), Amber Burnam, Katrina
Johnson, Joey Allen, and Reid Copelin. Also competing for Hedley were
Patricia Valles, Ethan Naylor, Sierra Shelp, and Kayla Elam
in Current Issues and Events, and Laura Howard, who competed in
Spelling. Hedley was the smallest school in the competition, so sponsors
feel good about their teams as they prepare for district competition March
31st in Silverton. The next contest for the students is February 14th at
Canadian.
