Dr.
Robert Earl Gerner, 76, of Vail, Colo. died Friday, October 5,
2007, in Denver, Colo.Graveside Services were held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday,
October 12, 2007, at Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon, with Rev. Truman
Ledbetter, officiating. Services were under the arrangement of Robertson
Funeral Directors of Clarendon.
Dr. Gerner was born December 12,
1930, in Lelia Lake to Edward W. and Alma Jane Russell Gerner. He attended
Lelia Lake schools, Clarendon College, and West Texas State University. He
received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in
Galveston and surgical residence from Hahnaman Medical Hospital in
Philadelphia, Penn. He worked for a number of years in Buffalo, New
York’s Roswell Park Memorial Institute in cancer research before moving
to Denver, Colo. in the early 1970’s. He practiced there for many years,
specializing in cancer surgery. At the time of his illness and death, he
had been practicing in Vail, Colorado, for over 20 years. Dr. Gerner was a
dedicated physician; he spent his life in service to others, working to
make their lives better. He was a Methodist.
Dr. Gerner was preceded in death
by his parents; 5 brothers, Ernest, Henry, Bill, Ray, & Harold.
Survivors include three
sisters-in-law, Irene Williams of Memphis, Helga Youngman of Denver, &
Leora Gerner of Yucaipi, Calif.; several nieces and nephews including
Johnny Gerner and Rick Gerner, formerly of Clarendon, and Sabine
Brookmeyer of Denver.
