Alta
Lewis Lane, 102, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, in Canyon.
Services
were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2008, at First Presbyterian
Church of Canyon with Rev. Dr. Don McDonald, pastor, officiating.
Graveside services were held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2008, at
Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon. Services were under the arrangement of
Brooks Funeral Directors.
Alta
was born March 16, 1906, in Dublin, to the late Ernest Luther and Maggie
Reaves Lewis. She moved to Donley County in 1907. She attended Lelia Lake
School, graduating in 1923 as Valedictorian of her class. She attended
Clarendon Methodist College and West Texas State University, where she
received a Bachelor of Arts degree. She did advanced work at the
University of Colorado in Boulder and Western State College in Gunnison,
Colo. She taught school 41 years in schools at Lelia Lake, Clarendon,
White Deer, and Pampa. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of
Pampa, where she was a Sunday School Class and Department Supervisor for
20 years. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Sorority and held
a lifetime membership in the National Education Association, Texas State
Teachers Association, Phi Beta Kappa Green Sorority, and the Order of the
Eastern Star. Her avocation was being a Professional Book Reviewer. She
was also a member of several social organizations.
Alta
married McHenry Lane on December 22, 1929; and he preceded her in death on
October 19, 1991. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Carrol
Lewis, and five sisters, Texas Batson, Lorene Holland, Lee Reeves, Jewel
Robertson, and Louise Howard.
She
is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The
family wishes to offer their thanks to special caregivers, Irene Maldonado
and Pina Lopez. The family also wishes to thank BSA Hospice.
