Courthouse featured on calendar

By Roger Estlack, Clarendon Enterprise

Donley County’s historic courthouse is featured in the 1998 “Old Friends: Great Texas Courthouses” wall calendar, along with one other Panhandle courthouse and 11 others from across the state.

Other counties in the new calendar are Deaf Smith, Atascosa, Comal, Eastland, Jim Wells, Johnson, Lamar, Mason, Maverick, Montague, Navarro, and Trinity.  Each section — the cover and each month — includes a color painting of a courthouse and a 1,500-word history of the building and its county.

“The Donley and Deaf Smith buildings are representative of the wide diversity of Panhandle courthouse architectural styles,” said writer-illustrator Bill Morgan in a press release to the Enterprise.

The Dallas area resident visited Clarendon three times because “I was sure I’d missed something about that great old courthouse — and I still think I did.”

The 1998 “Old Friends: Great Texas Courthouses” calendars are at bookstores and some historical museums. Mail orders ($12.95 per calendar) should be sent to Bill Morgan, 116 Sunview, Sunnyvale, TX 75182.  Phone 792/203-1752 for more details.
